books
I finished reading two books this month. One was One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. It is a memoir touching upon Western imperialism, through the lens of Omar's lifestory and career. I actually highlighted many quotes from the book, which I will compile in a future post because idiotic me misremembered the due date and time for my Libby loan. The other book was The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling, which I have written a review for here. In its essence, it is a lesbian horror fantasy with nuns and cannibalism and a lot of bees. I also started King of Envy by Ana Huang, but I wasn't able to renew my loan. It is what I would call "hetslop" and I hate the man's POV. I have put a hold for it again in attempt to see it through, but the book is longer than I thought it would be and I might have to check it metaphorically out of the window if it gets really bad.
sports
all i did was watch hockey so there isn't really anything to—kidding, i'm in my 9th year as a celtics fan, so there was no way i was missing jayson tatum's return to the nba court following his achilles injury and healing timeline. i also caught a tiny bit of f1 academy in shanghai through their … twitter stream? lmao. hockey wise, i caught 14 san jose sharks, 9 new jersey devils, 2 montreal victoire, 1 colorado avalanche, and 1 nashville predators game (solely because they were playing in the middle of the day). i only watched 16 of these games in full, and i stopped trying to catch every devils game possible for a sanity check. i vowed to only tune into the games if they scored first OR tied it up in the first, and they've won every game i've watched in march since i made that vow.
fics
read only 720k words of fic, but I spend a week vacationing in NYC, which is a PLUS. i am TOUCHING GRASS. i also briefly freed myself from the hrpf trenches by reading a ningrina, then proceeded to dive back into the trenches. embarrassing of me!! otoh i could be clicking into f1 rpf, which might be worse
music
top 5 artists: raye, muna, nct 127, tate mcrae, daya
top 5 albums: click clack symphony (single) - raye; this music may contain hope - raye; dancing on the wall (single) - muna; sit still, look pretty - daya; about u - muna
top 5 tracks: click clack symphony (feat. hans zimmer) - raye; dancing on the wall - muna; heavenly blue - xnghan&xoul; disturbia - rihanna; tastes like you - ellie goulding
albums i checked out this month:
- daya sit still, look pretty. i know this is one of my top 5 albums of the month, but it's largely because i fell asleep listening to it while on the plane and not because i loved it. it wasn't bad to listen to but i'm not going to pretend i liked this album enough that i can name a track that stands out to me. listening to an album was a result of me clicking on "hide away" for nostalgia reasons (and thinking about the tiktok done by the maple leafs rookies), then forgetting that i had clicked on the track at all.i let it run and loop without really meaning to
- raye this music may contain hope. so, so, so good. words cannot explain how much i love this album. i have a post written about it but haven't fleshed it out yet because i am just so overwhelmed by emotion trying to talk about it, but trust me when i say everyone NEEDS to listen to this album!! we love music and crafty storytelling in this household
- muna about u. you ever loop a song by an artist so much that you forget they have other songs? that you might, y'know, like their other songs if you liked this particular song so much? especially if said song is in a particular album? well. "winterbreak" is that song and about u is that album. shoutout to nik who threw this onto my radar a few years ago because i now associate this song sooo hard with dojae. the album? lovely. the lyrics? devastating
singles:
- flo "leak it": such a good song. the only reason i didn't listen to it as much was because "click clack symphony" dropped the same day and i was looping that one like a madman. but can't go wrong with a flo release
- louane "conduire": i feel like louane has some really good singles but this didn't hit … she's on my radar because i like some of her sad songs but this wasn't for me
- muna "dancing on the wall": i love the melody, and the lyrics make me want to bash my head against the wall. i dumped the lyrics into mj's dms as soon as i listened to it and knew the lyrics would haunt me and remind me of dojae!! again!!
movies
not really a movies/film person with the variety of interests i have (see above lol) but i watched two this month!
one was left-handed girl directed by shih-ching tsou. it is a movie revolving a family of three—a mother moving her family to taipei to start a noodle stand at the night market, who's making excuses left and right to pay for her estranged husband's medical bills; a daughter who works at a betel nut stand; a 5-year-old daughter who's left-handed and gets scolded by her maternal grandfather for using her left hand, and thus resorts to covering her left hand, committing night market theft (at least, as much as a 5-year-old can do). the movie was … okay. i didn't hate it, but it wasn't that interesting or engaging. i did cry during the big reveal at the end. also glad i did not watch this movie with my mother; i do not want to watch on-screen sex with her!!
the other movie i watched was project hail mary, which i have reviewed in full here. tldr: i had fun but i feel it was because i had read the book. not actually a good movie, so please tread with caution if you spend a stupid amount of money on it! do watch in imax though.
